The short answer

What to check when you buy specialty coffee beans online
A shop shelf lets you smell the bag and ask when it was roasted. Online, you have to read for the same signals. These five tell you most of what you need.
1. Freshness
Coffee is at its best in the weeks after roasting. Look for a roaster that roasts in small batches rather than selling beans that have sat on a shelf for months. Jpresso's retail beans are freshly roasted at the roastery in Bandar Sri Damansara.
2. Where the beans come from
Specialty coffee should come with an origin, not only a flavour description. Jpresso sells single origins from Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Ethiopia and Indonesia, plus eight house blends.
3. Halal certification
For many Malaysian homes and cafes this decides the purchase. Jpresso Coffee Roastery is Halal certified MS 1500. Ask any roaster you are comparing the same question.
4. Prices you can see
You should see the price before you commit, not negotiate it over WhatsApp. Jpresso's retail 250 g bags start from RM34. Most bags are RM34 to RM44, and single-estate lots are RM59 to RM76.
5. Delivery on a small order
A low bag price means little if delivery costs almost as much. On Bloom Daily, delivery in Peninsular Malaysia is free on RM75 or more of Jpresso coffee (parcels up to 5 kg). Below that, it is RM7 for orders under 3 kg.

About the roastery
- A roastery, not a cafe. There is no dine-in service and no drinks menu. You are buying the beans, to brew at home or to serve under your own cafe's name.
- Air-roasted. The beans are roasted in a stream of hot air rather than in a drum. See why we air-roast.
- The roaster: Jpresso was founded by Jason (SCA Certified Roaster) and has been roasting since 2017.
- Halal certified MS 1500.
